Every day we spend debating between burying or burning our waste is a day that we could have spent using real solutions to stop waste before it starts.
Yesterday, the Connecticut Senate passed a deeply flawed piece of legislation (HB 6664) that will undermine Connecticut’s efforts to solve its waste crisis.
Systemic racism, discriminatory barriers, and racial violence cause immense hardship and suffering for people across the country and the world. That includes the disproportionate impacts BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) communities and low-income communities face from pollution, climate change, and the waste crisis.
Deceptively named false solutions like “advanced recycling,” “chemical recycling,” and “molecular recycling” are nothing more than a magic act. Fossil fuel giants use smoke-and-mirrors to pretend that they’ve somehow made single-use plastics “sustainable.” But in reality, “advanced recycling” is just a different way to burn plastic.
