Model Legislative Toolkits

We can’t tackle our waste problem without the right laws in place. Just Zero knows that sensible Zero Waste policies protect all communities and the environment. That’s why we’ve developed model legislative toolkits that can meaningfully advance community centered Zero Waste solutions.

How to Use Our Model Legislation

We understand that every state, city, and community is unique. There isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach to enacting sensible and effective Zero Waste laws. You have your own Zero Waste priorities, and you know the political realities of your community best. That’s why we’ve designed model legislative toolkits that are interactive and customizable – to help you build a bill that will achieve your goals.

Step 1

What issue do you want to address through new legislation? This can be phasing out single-use plastics, reducing food waste, protecting communities from trash-burning facilities, improving recycling, or a combination of these.

Step 2

Read the model legislative toolkit for the issue you want to address. Learn about the legislative solution you’re interested in and examples of states and communities that have already enacted the policy.

Step 3

Review the different policy decisions you can make and develop a customized bill proposal that will work for your state or community.

Our Model Legislative Toolkits

The way we manage waste through burying and burning trash is unsustainable and deeply unjust. These methods damage the climate, poison communities, and threaten our environment.

It’s time we move away from polluting and toxic waste systems and replace them with proven, effective, and modern Zero Waste solutions. And Just Zero is here to help. We’ve developed toolkits to help you design legislation that will tackle some of the largest problems with production, consumption, and disposal practices in your state or community.

The Legislative Process

Understanding and navigating the legislative process can be challenging. But Just Zero is here to help! Although every state’s process is unique, they tend to follow a similar structure.
